As a survivor of ovarian cancer, every day is lucky for me. But Friday the 13th of April was especially lucky for all of us at Gold Eagle Co.
Every year, Gold Eagle supports the American Cancer Society Walk & Roll by fielding a group of Team Members to participate in a 5K walk along Chicago’s lakefront. The 2018 event was scheduled for Saturday, April 21, and we knew that Mother Nature would still be shedding her winter coat and odds were good that we’d we’d be greeted with a cold, wet and blustery day as we gathered at Soldier Field.
So: EAGLE SQUAD TO THE RESCUE!
We decided to bring the Walk inside. To borrow the legendary phrase: If we can’t get to the mountain, we’ll bring the mountain to Gold Eagle!
We created a waking route in the plant with carnival games, Gold Eagle bucks, raffle prizes, photo booth and lunch. We also created an “I’m Walking For” board at the start of the route, just like the ACS Walk & Roll. Best of all, each dollar raised was matched by the Hirsch Foundation. We also made the event a tribute to Dawn Sullivan, our Gold Eagle Team Member who recently lost her battle with cancer.
Setting the right tone for an event is crucial to its success. As our walkers gathered to begin their journey, I felt proud, joyous and LUCKY to be a part of bringing this event to Gold Eagle.
The Walk was a grand success! We raised $1,888.00, which is doubled thanks to the Hirsch Foundation. Thanks to us:
- Someone will have a ride to a treatment facility.
- Someone will have a place to stay during treatments.
- The research will continue to find new ways to abolish cancerous cells / tumors.
The official American Cancer Society Walk & Roll took place on Saturday, April 21. Mother Nature did cooperate, as about 20 Gold Eagle Team Members turned out to participate for the 5K walk on Chicago’s lakefront, adding to the dollar total raised at Gold Eagle.
We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. You all know me. I am a cancer survivor. I am lucky.
